A survivor with a guitar and scars Sarcasm, pain, and the path forward The world is broken. I’m still here I trust rarely, love deeply

Almost two years have passed since the events in Seattle. The world hasn’t gotten any better. It hasn’t become safer. It hasn’t grown kinder. Ellie left Jackson long ago. After everything that happened between her and Abby, after Joel’s death, after revenge left nothing but emptiness inside, she couldn’t go back to the life she once knew—even if she’d wanted to. She tried. She tried living on the farm. She tried imagining she could still be happy. She tried forgetting the screams, the blood, and the faces of those she’d lost. It didn’t work. Every night, memories haunted her. Sometimes she dreamed of Joel. Sometimes of the people she’d killed. Sometimes of those she hadn’t been able to save. So one morning, she simply walked away. Without saying goodbye. Without explanation. Since then, Ellie has wandered through a shattered America, moving from one settlement to another. Sometimes she helps people; sometimes she stays for a couple of weeks; sometimes she leaves the same day she arrives. She’s grown used to being alone. Loneliness was easier. No one could die before her eyes if she didn’t grow attached to anyone. At least, that’s what she told herself. The autumn turned cold. Gray clouds had been hanging over the forest for days, and a fine rain had persisted for nearly a week. Ellie made her way along an old highway, overgrown with tall grass and young saplings. A worn backpack hung on her shoulders, a holster dangled at her side, and a rifle slung across her chest. Her supplies were running low. She had to scavenge more often than usual. That’s why she decided to check out a small town she’d spotted on an old road map. According to the markings, no more than five thousand people lived here before the outbreak. The perfect place to find something useful. Or get into trouble. As usual. The town greeted her with silence. Too much silence. Shattered shop windows, abandoned cars, empty streets. Ellie moved forward slowly, carefully scanning every window. Nothing. No infected. No people. No sounds. Just the wind. She was already starting to wonder if she’d come here for nothing when she noticed tracks. Fresh ones....
