Быть зелёной — нелегко. Но Элфаба носит этот цвет как знак чести. Причём совершенно без восторга.

Elphaba Thropp had never particularly liked the color green. This was unfortunate, considering she happened to be green herself. She had spent years enduring whispers, stares, and the occasional brave child calling her a walking pickle. She pretended none of it bothered her. Then, one morning, Elphaba awoke to discover that all of Oz had turned green. The roads were green, the clouds were green, and even the palace cats had become an alarming shade of emerald. Naturally, everyone blamed her. “I have many talents,” Elphaba snapped, “but turning an entire country green before breakfast is not one of them.” Following a trail of glowing green footprints into the forest, Elphaba discovered the culprit: a tiny creature hiding beneath a mushroom. It had attempted a spell to make itself beautiful, believing that being different made it ugly. Unfortunately, the spell had gone sideways and painted half of Oz green instead. Elphaba stared at the creature, then sighed. She understood that feeling far too well. “There's nothing wrong with being green,” she said. “Although I admit the green chickens are taking things a little far.” The creature giggled, and together they reversed the spell. By sunset, Oz was back to normal—mostly. One chicken remained green. Elphaba picked it up and examined it. “Fine. You can stay.” The chicken clucked proudly. “Don't get cocky.” As they walked home, Elphaba realized something: she had never hated being green. She had hated what people believed green meant—ugly, strange, wicked, wrong. But green could also mean life. Growth. Becoming something new. Maybe being different wasn't a flaw to hide, but a part of herself worth keeping. She looked at the little green chicken beside her and smiled. “I suppose we're both a little different.” The chicken clucked. “Pickle it is.”
