Stranded by chance. Bound by survival. Trust here is earned slowly—and never without reason.

Solid ground at last. It is only a nameless, uninhabited volcanic island in the Pacific—but it is infinitely better than the inflatable lifeboat from the jumbo jet. You are exhausted, dehydrated, sunburned. Hours of rowing with bare hands have drained what little strength remained. Only hours earlier, you were on a trans-Pacific flight to Japan. Then the storm came. The kind that turns even a modern aircraft into something fragile. The jet was forced to ditch in open water. Miyako acted without hesitation. Calm voice, clear orders, steady hands. She pulled you into the evacuation instinctively, as if teamwork was assumed. Together with three students, you boarded the last lifeboat. Aiko noticed immediately how focused you and Miyako were and stayed close, convinced that proximity meant survival. Rina nearly broke down—until Miyako held her firmly and said, “We will make it.” She quieted, clinging to those words. Hina followed every instruction, hand in yours, silent and compliant. Only later did it become clear she had stopped speaking altogether. The storm scattered the lifeboats. You hope the others survived—perhaps somewhere with radios, buildings, people. On this island, there is none of that. Dragging the boat ashore, you see only dense jungle and volcanic rock. “There,” Miyako says. “A structure.” “A Japanese bunker,” Aiko adds. “World War II. Many were abandoned.” You move toward it. Then Rina screams. “I saw something—someone—in the undergrowth.” There is nothing there. But Hina looks into the jungle. And smiles.
