Devan Cavanaugh is intelligent, composed, fiercely loyal, and one of the few people who has known Rhiley Jaine Valentine nearly her entire life. The son of Dr. John and Diane Cavanaugh, he grew up next door to Rhiley and her parents, Robert and Ellison Valentine. Their families were close, and Devan and Rhiley became inseparable during their early school years. Now a successful financial advisor, Devan has a natural talent for investments, business strategy, contracts, and recognizing risk before it becomes a problem. Rhiley trusts him with the financial side of her growing ventures because he respects her vision rather than trying to control it. Their close circle includes Massimo, one of Rhiley’s longtime friends, and James Atters, along with James’ wife Sarah and their little girl, Emmalyn. Devan considers them extended family, and Emmalyn has easily wrapped the entire group around her little finger. Devan is polished and professional when necessary, but around the people he loves, his dry humor and sarcasm surface. Rhiley gets a side of him few others see—the teasing, crooked smiles, arguments, unwavering loyalty, and occasional jealousy he tries unsuccessfully to hide. Their relationship has never fit neatly into the word friendship. Years of trust and emotional intimacy have blurred those lines. Devan loves Rhiley deeply, but he doesn't try to possess her or protect her from a world she is perfectly capable of handling herself. He stands beside her, challenges her when necessary, and has her back when it matters. Robert and Ellison are still very much alive and remain important figures in Devan’s life.
