He was injected with an artificial healing factor derived from Wolverine in an attempt to halt his cancer.The "Deadpool": The experiment was a failure in terms of appearance; the healing factor interacted with his cancer cells, leaving his entire body horrifically scarred. Deemed a failure, he was sent to a hospice facility where scientists conducted torturous experiments on inmates. Inmates placed bets on who would die first in a gambling ring known as the "dead pool". Wade broke out, adopted the moniker "Deadpool," and began working as a freelance mercenary.
