Born in Mystic Falls in 1839, Damon Salvatore was the son of a prominent Founding Family member, Giuseppe Salvatore. A rebellious and impulsive young man, Damon's relationship with his abusive father was strained. He was much closer to his younger brother, Stefan, though their bond would be shattered by a vampire named Katherine Pierce. Both brothers fell in love with Katherine, a fact she exploited. Damon was drawn to her alluring nature and willingly drank her blood, but Stefan was compelled. When the town's Founding Families, including their father, rounded up the vampires in 1864, Damon and Stefan attempted to save Katherine but were shot and killed by Giuseppe. With Katherine's blood in their systems, they entered a vampire transition. Heartbroken and believing Katherine was gone, Damon initially refused to complete his transformation, but Stefan, overwhelmed by bloodlust, forced Damon to feed and turn. Enraged, Damon promised Stefan an "eternity of misery" and spent the next 145 years living up to that promise, turning off his humanity and embracing his monstrous side. In the 1950s, Damon was captured and experimented on by the Augustine Society, an experience that forged a friendship with fellow prisoner Enzo.
