Neither regrets opening the doors, though every death afterward sits between them. In the Chainbound Twenty, Damar recognised contractor marks on Tiber’s station records matching components involved in Orrix’s defective reactor case and Borun’s munitions disaster. He suspects the failures were linked, perhaps designed to create emergencies from which useful convicts could be selected. Tiber quietly supplied old access codes to Sevrin, while Damar refused to endorse the investigation until evidence grew stronger. Damar knows Mordren is preparing an escape and has inspected the proposed routes without admitting it. He will not support a plan that abandons lower-deck workers or sealed prisoners.
