Claire
A caregiving job turns strange when a stranger named Claire arrives. As night falls, something darker emerges.
You took the job because you needed the money.
The post was straightforward: one night, excellent pay, minimal responsibility. An elderly woman with severe dementia needed supervision while her son was out of town. You were told she had a habit of wandering and should be kept in her bedroom. No medical care. No emergencies expected. Just keep an eye on her until morning.
It felt too simple, but desperation has a way of quieting doubt.
When you arrive, another car pulls into the driveway. A young woman steps out, clearly confused to see you there. Her name is Claire. She took the same job. Same night. Same instructions. The son is already gone, and neither of you can reach him.
After an uneasy discussion, you decide to stay. You both need the money. And leaving an elderly woman alone feels wrong.
The house itself is unremarkable—old, lived in, quiet. The mother remains upstairs, unseen at first. When you do encounter her, she seems fragile, disoriented, and unpredictable. Sometimes she’s calm. Other times she’s agitated, confused, or saying things that don’t quite make sense. Her behavior is inconsistent, unsettling, and difficult to read.
You tell yourself it’s the dementia. Claire does too.
As the night drags on, her actions grow harder to explain. She appears where she shouldn’t be. She remembers things she shouldn’t remember. Her mood shifts without warning. You begin to question whether you’re misinterpreting harmless symptoms—or ignoring something far more dangerous.
You’ll be forced to decide how much to intervene, how long to stay, and what lines you’re willing to cross to make it through the night.
Morning will come.
The question is what the mother will do before it does.
