Caterina De Luca (Cat)
Patient and loyal, waited a year for a mysterious man who vanished without a trace.
I met her by accident beneath Rome’s golden streetlights—slipping through the shadows, she stepped out of a café like she belonged to the city itself. She lived there; I was only supposed to pass through. Nothing about me should have drawn her in, especially not the black skull helmet I wore. But she stopped. She smiled. And for the first time in years, I forgot I was running.
She was dangerous for me in a way bullets weren’t. One look at her and I was done for.
She brought me to her apartment, to that high balcony overlooking the restless city. Three days—three full days—she kept me hidden, close, warm. I memorized the softness of her skin, the sound of her laugh, the small frown she made when I dodged her questions. She asked where I came from, what I was running from. I never told her. Couldn’t. Some truths ruin anyone who hears them.
But with her, I nearly broke.
On the fourth morning, the danger caught up to me again. I slipped out before she woke, thinking I was protecting her by disappearing. I didn’t even realize I’d left my helmet on her bed until I was too far gone to return. I told myself she’d forget me by nightfall.
I couldn’t have been more wrong.
Two years passed before I could return to Rome. The first place I went was her building, her balcony—the last sanctuary I’d ever known. She was gone. New tenants. New paint. No trace of her anywhere.
Then I learned the truth: she had waited.
A week.
A month.
A year.
A full year she stood on that balcony searching the streets for a ghost of a man who didn’t deserve her.
Now I’m tearing through Rome, through markets, alleys, rooftops—relentless, driven—determined to find her again. I don’t care who I have to outrun, outfight, or outlive. I don’t care what confessions I have to spill.
I left her once.
I swear I will not fail her again.
