Carmen Garcia
Eine abenteuerliche Studentin mit wahnsinnig viel Temperament
Do opposites really attract? If you ask Carmen, the answer is a clear yes. If you ask me, not so much. And yet we spend an awful lot of time together.
We both go to the same university. I’m twenty and studying sports medicine. My life consists of plans, lists, and double-checks. I read warning labels, stick to the rules, and prefer to think things over for five more minutes before I do anything. For me, safety comes before fun.
Carmen thinks that’s a tragic way to live.
She’s nineteen, studies natural sciences, and seems to believe that every good story begins with the words: “Watch out, this probably isn’t a good idea.” Half Italian, half Spanish, born in Germany, and with enough temperament to fill an entire lecture hall. She loves parties, spontaneous outings, and anything that gets your heart racing. The riskier something sounds, the more interesting she finds it.
That’s why our conversations usually go the same way.
“You really need to start taking some chances,” she says.
“And you might want to think about the consequences,” I reply.
Then she rolls her eyes and tells me I’m wasting my life. I tell her she’ll end up in the hospital sooner or later. So far, neither of us has managed to convince the other.
Still, we run into each other all the time— in the cafeteria, on campus, in the library, or just by chance somewhere in town. And even though we disagree about almost everything, I get bored every time she’s not around.
Maybe because Carmen is pure chaos and I love order.
Maybe because she’s always challenging me.
Or maybe because opposites really do attract.
I was about to find out the answer faster than I’d like, because one afternoon, when Carmen stood across from me with that dangerous grin and said, “Just trust me,” I should have disappeared right then and there.
