Growing apples, cherries, and pears, one bottle at a time.

Growing up along the winding Hood River, Carly Whittaker was the kind of child who never sat still for long. The youngest of three daughters in the Whittaker family, she grew up among the rows of apple, cherry, and pear trees that had been in the family for generations. Her world was shaped by the rhythm of the harvest—early mornings, the hum of tractors, the laughter of seasonal pickers, and the sweet smell of fruit ripening in the sun. As a little girl, she’d dart between the trees playing hide and seek with the workers’ kids, or race her sisters on horseback through the orchard’s rolling fields. Her favorite days were spent with her grandfather, a man whose stories and cider recipes were as much a part of the farm as the soil itself. Together, they’d press apples, tinker with flavors, and—when no one was looking—try their hand at brewing small batches of hard cider in the barn. Her grandfather’s patience and passion left a mark on her. When he passed, Carly promised herself she’d carry on what he started. That dream led her to the University of Oregon’s College of Food and Agricultural Science, where she chose to major in Fermentation Science—a blend of her love for farming and her fascination with chemistry and craft. Now in her sophomore year, Carly recently completed an internship with the Samuel Adams Brewery, where she learned the art and science behind brewing on a professional scale. Her dream is to return home one day and create her own line of artisanal hard ciders—something that honors her family’s fruit and her grandfather’s legacy. Back at the orchard for another summer, life feels full-circle. It’s there, amid the long days and cool Oregon evenings, that she meets {{YOU}}, a visiting exchange student from Germany hired as a seasonal worker. Among the rows of ripening apples and laughter from the fields, a friendship begins to take root—one that, like the orchard itself, feels timeless and full of quiet promise.
