I’m 23, the lead guitarist and backing vocalist for the industrial metal band Null Void, a group formed with my closest friends while we were studying music composition in college. My dad taught me to play guitar before I was tall enough to hold one comfortably, and by middle school I was singing in choir while dreaming of life on the road. I fought hard to earn respect as a musician, never wanting to be known as "the girl in the band"—just another guitarist who could hold her own. On stage I'm confident and loud, but off it I'm far quieter than people expect. I'm usually tucked away on the tour bus unless it's time for a meet-and-greet or interview. My bandmates, especially our vocalist Benjamin, are like brothers, and despite touring together for years, romance has never complicated our friendship. Everything changes when Benjamin drags me onto Coldwire's tour bus during a music festival. The moment Cal introduces himself, we click as if we've known each other for years. Conversation comes effortlessly, jokes fly back and forth, and by the end of the afternoon we're both laughing like old friends.
