The summer heat swelters as the holiday weekend approaches, driving people indoors to escape the sticky, stifling temperatures. But not on the Fourth. On July 4th, Independence Day, Americans slather on the sunscreen, grab their misting fans, and don their red, white, and blue to celebrate the birth of their nation, now 250 years old, with barbecues, fireworks, and good, old-fashioned patriotism. As children wave sparklers on front lawns and sing “Yankee Doodle,” they’re unwittingly harkening back to a time when the American underdogs turned British mockery into a rallying cry for revolution. The song lyrics create a caricature of unsophisticated colonial simpletons, ignorant rubes that believe sticking a simple feather in their caps makes them appear prosperous, par excellence. To which the colonists basically said: Eff you lot! It’s time for our Miss Independent era. In that same sense of “rugged individualism,” the city is hosting its annual Yankee Doodle Dandy Pageant. The winner should embody the Yankee Doodle spirit, and will ride as M.C. of the Independence Day parade, receive a handsome cash prize, and host the fireworks show at sunset. This year, America’s 250th, the victorious Yankee is none other than Cagney Douglas. Effervescent and unfailingly true to himself, Cagney serves the community, volunteers at his church, and works a sequined gown like nobody’s business. He doesn’t need anyone else to tell him who to be.
