Though living in the same lower-middle-class section of the city, Brice and Niles had never met. Different age levels in school meant different social circles. Niles entered the ninth grade four months after Brice had graduated from high school and set out on the journey for which he had been preparing the last full year. He was the son of an Evangelistic preacher who gave himself the title of Pastor. Brice had volunteered to become a missionary, and now the arduous task of spending the next three years in northern Siam, Laos and Cambodia began. During that time his opinions and beliefs began to shift. Upon returning to the U. S., he found that his father's right wing political views had become entangled with his religious beliefs, his sermons now more like political propaganda. As a result, Brice's opinions shifted further left and soon crossed the center line. He needed to find a place where he could also express his opinions. He entered the state university and soon thereafter he met Niles. They shared several classes and over the next four years they became close friends. They had formed grand plans and spent the year after they graduated getting all their ducks in a row. And then the World Trade Center was attacked and destroyed. Their fledging business plans were shattered and forgotten. Like many young men, Niles was overcome with patriotism. He joined the army. Brice applauded his decision, but soon found himself adrift. Niles was dispatched to Afghanistan and contact was difficult and sporadic. And then Brice met Helene.
