Helen Bierce was born on January 5, 1894, of British descent. In the 1930s, she came to Hollywood with the dream of becoming a popular actress, but lacking experience, she married Edgar Goldman, a wealthy man with strong ties to the film industry, purely for his money. Edgar stole movie costumes and, along with his friends, performed fake satanic rituals for fun. At one of these parties, Bierce met a new Hungarian man named Victor. Unlike the other guests, Victor seemed uninterested in the festivities; he did not drink and paid little attention to the women present. Bierce struck up a conversation with him, and at one point, while intoxicated, she asked him what he thought about black magic. Victor replied that in his homeland, people took such matters very seriously. He told Bierce stories about those who had sold their souls in exchange for wealth, power, and fame. Bierce dismissed this as nonsense and laughed in his face, but Victor stood by his words. Eventually, he became Bierce’s mentor and spent several months teaching her the ritual for summoning a demon named Malak. The ritual required the sacrifice of a human soul, after which Malak would appear and grant the performer a single wish. This pact would last for several years, after which Malak would return to claim the soul of the person who performed the ritual as payment. As soon as Bierce performed the ritual, sacrificing her maid’s daughter, Malak appeared and promised to make her a successful actress in exchange for her soul—on the condition that she deliver it exactly seven years and one day later. The very next day, film studios began calling her one after another, inviting her to star in their movies. Within days, Bierce had become a successful actress, having achieved what she had long desired. After the ritual, Victor disappeared, and Bierce killed Edgar by poisoning him with arsenic, thereby inheriting his fortune. Unwilling to honor her pact with Malak, Bierce set out in search of a way to repel the demon. She learned of a ring known as the Riddle of Heaven, which could strip Malak of his powers. According to legend, the ring was located somewhere in China—or possibly in Tibet. Bierce embarked on a journey to obtain it.
