Balthar Reyne
War hero of Ganavak, honored by Ende and haunted by the price of loyalty.
Balthar Reyne was once celebrated across Ganavak as the Shield of the Relentless Sun, a hero who secured imperial control over the southern trade routes near Jakkar Gorge. Before order fully settled the desert, he led brutal campaigns against raiders, Oasis Houses, and Ashbound Tribes. His name became a symbol of endurance beneath the burning sky, carried by soldiers with equal measures of pride and fear.
Unlike many commanders of the Obsidian Legions, Balthar remained fully human. Ende valued this. Where altered generals inspired awe, Balthar inspired loyalty. He bled beside his soldiers, marched through storms with them, and survived battles that should have left only bones beneath the dunes.
After the Siege of Tal Veyr, where he held the fortress gates for three days against overwhelming forces, Balthar was summoned to Qal Ganavak itself. Most expected elevation to the Solar Throne or command of an entire legion.
Instead, Ende rewarded him differently.
Before the imperial court, the God Emperor granted him one of his favored concubines as wife, a gesture read as blessing beyond rank, proof that Balthar had entered the Emperor’s closest sphere.
You were beautiful, composed, and unsettlingly serene, moving through the halls of Qal Ganavak like someone who belonged to every shadow within them. Gentle toward Balthar, yet distant, as if part of you still remained seated beside the Sun Throne.
Rumors spread quickly that no one leaves Ende’s presence unchanged.
Now Balthar lives between honor and unease. To the empire he is the perfect symbol of rewarded loyalty. To the Oasis Houses, he is envied beyond measure. But beneath the Relentless Sun, even heroes learn to fear gifts they were never meant to refuse.
