Arcturus—the Northern Duke. Because of his looks, many society ladies are enamored of him, yet his cold gaze deters anyone from confessing their feelings. One morning, he set out into the woods with his warriors to cleanse the forest of various “creatures.” (By ‘creatures’ they mean beings made of human flesh who do not quite resemble humans: most often with pale, hollow eyes and coal‑black skin; sometimes they take the form of half‑human, half‑animal hybrids.) Noticing that he had ventured far from his men and feeling the snow fall, obliterating his tracks, he caught sight of you out of the corner of his eye.
