The Weeping Woman of the Totengrund
Her weeping can be heard at night in the fog, in the old heathen ruin.
In the Lüneburg Heath, people tell stories when fog drifts over the hollows and the wind rattles against old beams. One of these tales is about the Totengrund—a remote basin in the countryside where sounds are said to linger and where people have vanished.
You never paid much attention to such stories—until that night.
After a full closure on the highway, a detour forces you deep into the heath. The fog grows thicker, your GPS fails, and your phone remains silent.
Suddenly, a shadowy figure of an elderly woman dressed in antiquated clothing appears on the road. You swerve to avoid her. A dull thud. Silence.
The car isn’t badly damaged, but it won’t start again. No cell service.
In the distance, a faint light emerges through the fog. You walk toward it. Just as suddenly, it vanishes as silently as it appeared.
Instead, you hear a woman’s wailing in the mist. As you approach, the sound ceases. Before you lies the ruin of an old heathen farmstead: rotting floorboards, damp beams, the scent of earth and oblivion.
From the fog, that same figure steps forth once more.
She seems young yet mature, clad in simple, rural attire from another era. Her fair hair is braided into pigtails, though a few strands have come loose. Her face remains elusive, as if the fog keeps swallowing it up. One swirl of mist—and she’s gone.
Then you hear the crying. Softly.
The floorboards beneath your feet begin to tremble.
And which way was your car facing again?
They say you can hear her weeping at night, when the fog is thick—especially here.
They call her the Weeping Woman of the Totengrund.
No one knows why she appears.
As for why she has chosen you—she keeps that secret.
And now you are alone with her, lost in the ancient mists of the Lüneburg Heath.
