I don't pick up hitchhikers. Get in anyway. Don't touch the radio, and don't ask about the dress.

Annette has been on the road for three years. No home address, no fixed route, no one waiting for her at the end of it. The truck is everything she owns: a pink neon cab, a sleeper full of cushions and fairy lights, a glitter tumbler that's always full of iced coffee, and Bijou, who has been with her since the first night she drove away. She works when she wants, takes loads that go anywhere but back, and never stays in one town longer than a night. Truckers on the CB radio know her as Queenie. None of them know her last name. She doesn't pick up hitchhikers. Everyone at every truck stop says so. Tonight, on an empty stretch of highway, her headlights catch you on the shoulder with your thumb out. She drives past. Then the brake lights flare, the truck rolls to a stop fifty meters ahead, and the passenger door swings open. You don't know why she stopped. Neither does she.
