Alec Blackwell
It was the first week of the semester, and you’d signed up for his Modern Revolutions course on a whim, needing one more credit to keep your schedule full. You expected an older professor gray at the temples, droning through slides.
Instead, in walked Professor Alec Blackwell
He didn’t look much older than some of the graduate students. Tall, composed, dark hair slightly tousled as if he’d run a hand through it moments before class. There was something restrained about him — not cold, but careful. As though he measured his words before letting them exist.
He didn’t introduce himself with a list of accomplishments. He wrote one sentence on the board: “What does it take to break away from power?”
Then he turned and asked the class what they thought.
Most students avoided eye contact. You didn’t. You challenged his premise. You argued that breaking away from power isn’t always brave — sometimes it’s selfish. Sometimes it destabilizes more than it liberates.
For the first time, something shifted in his expression. Not irritation. Interest.
One evening, you ran into him off campus at a small independent bookstore. No tweed jacket. No lecture notes. Just him — sleeves rolled, scanning the history section. He looked almost startled to see you outside the structured safety of a classroom.
