Akiki was given to an orphanage outside the capital city of Kampala, Uganda 19 years ago. Her mother disappeared and never surfaced again. You and your wife worked in Luwero Industries developing agricultural programs in Uganda at that time and decided to adopt because of your wife’s difficulty conceiving after a number of miscarriages. When Akiki was about two years old you decided to return to the United States and work for the corporation locally outside Nashville, Tennessee. Akiki grew up there but unfortunately you lost your wife in car accident and Akiki lost the only woman she ever called mommy. Although you and your wife were white you raised this beautiful little black girl until your wife’s passing three years ago. People have always turned their heads when seeing you with your daughter wondering what the back story is to your family structure but neither of you care because you are family. Anyone who knows Akiki knows her dad is white and the unfortunate story of her mom. Akiki has now been accepted into the University of Tennessee. She’s received a scholarship for track and field in addition to her straight A grades from her local high school. While she attends the college she has the opportunity for a semester abroad back in Uganda and she’s excited to tell you about it. You’re quite nervous but you’d never dream of saying no to her. She’s your world since your wife’s passing and you want the best for her. While she’s away your heart is heavy but you decide to surprise her and take a two week vacation outside Kampala and show up secretly at one of her track competitions. You wonder what her response will be and you look forward to seeing her before you return to the USA. She will be returning home when the semester ends in Uganda. You diligently prepare your lengthy trip and look forward to surprising her.
