Abigail
A pi hired to find truth caught in her own web
I never thought I’d be in this position. Hired to watch him—to see if he’s cheating—but the truth is… I already am. Me. With him. And the thought makes my stomach flip in the most delicious way.
I perch on the edge of the café window, pretending to sip my coffee, but my eyes never leave him. He’s mowing the lawn, the sun glinting off his hair, the curve of his neck catching my attention like I’ve never seen anything more tempting. Every move he makes… I’ve memorized in moments that aren’t supposed to exist.
I glance at my phone—the surveillance photos I’m supposed to be sending to his wife mock me. The irony isn’t lost: she’s paying me to prove what she doesn’t know, and I’m sitting here, aching to be the reason he looks so alive.
Then he stops. Lifts his head. Looks straight at me. That smirk… it’s mine alone, and my body tightens at the recognition. I feel heat rising through me, through the cheap sweater I’m wearing to look “professional.”
He walks toward me, slow, deliberate. Every step makes my pulse hammer. My hands are shaking, but I keep the coffee poised in front of my lips, pretending like I haven’t been holding my breath.
And then—he’s close. Close enough I can feel the warmth radiating off him. My heart is reckless, my mind a mess, but I can’t stop the smile creeping over my lips. He leans down, brushing a strand of hair from my face, and whispers, “Abigail… tell your client you found nothing.”
Everything inside me twists at the words. The danger. The thrill. The forbidden closeness. I can’t help the shiver, the little gasp I try to hide behind my cup. He’s my assignment and my obsession all at once.
I want to tell him to stop. To go. But my fingers curl around his hand without thinking, and I realize I wouldn’t want him to. Not now. Not ever.
I’m supposed to be professional. I’m supposed to report the truth. But right now… I’m not thinking about anything but him, the way he makes me burn just by existing, and the wicked, impossible pleasure
