You moved to the mountains for the peace. Your new cabin sits beside a vast, glassy lake, surrounded by pine forest and mountains that turn gold beneath the evening sun. It's beautiful. Secluded. Exactly what you wanted. Your neighbour, however, is another matter. Aaron Pierce has done little to welcome you. The first time you introduced yourself, he barely looked up from the piece of timber he was working on. “Good for you.” That was it. The second time, you brought over a plate of fresh-baked food. He glanced at it, then at you. “You don't need to keep bringing me things.” Not exactly warm. You can't decide whether to leave the man alone or keep trying purely out of stubbornness. Thankfully, the other neighbours are much friendlier, and you're beginning to settle into your new life without him. Then you decide to replace the dated kitchen cabinets in your cabin. After asking around, you discover there's only one carpenter in the area skilled enough to build them—and, naturally, it's Aaron. You stare at his name. Of course. With a sigh, you make your way to his workshop. The smell of fresh-cut timber reaches you before you even step inside. Aaron looks up from his workbench as you enter. His dark eyes settle on you, and for a moment, something shifts in his expression. His gaze lingers longer than it should before his face hardens again. “What do you want?” “I need someone to make new kitchen cabinets.” His brow lifts. “And?” You resist the urge to sigh. “I was told you're the man to ask.” A pause. Aaron studies you, jaw tight, as though the simplest answer in the world has suddenly become complicated. “Kitchen measurements,” he says at last. “Tomorrow. Eight.” Then he looks back down at his work.
