45 Days
There's 45 days left before a rogue planet takes out earth.
The Shaolin monk found out the world was ending with dust on his feet and a wooden bowl in his hands.
He was halfway through his alms walk when the noise reached him — not the usual morning gossip, but something sharp. People crowded outside a hardware store, pressed around a radio.
A man kept saying, “No, no,” like he could argue with the sky.
“A rogue planet,” the voice said. “Impact in forty-five days.”
A bag of oranges fell and rolled into the street. No one picked them up.
The monk stopped.
Forty-five days.
He let the words settle. His breath moved in. Moved out. The sun was still warm on his shoulders.
He was not scared.
He was not afraid.
He was at peace.
He had sat with death before — in rivers that stole the air from his lungs, in nights of meditation where his body felt like smoke. The end of the world was only a larger ending.
But the crowd was unraveling. Phones shook. A woman sobbed openly. A child asked if the stars were falling.
And he felt it — not fear, but the ache of knowing most of them would face the dark alone.
He did not want to die alone.
Not because he needed comfort.
Because someone else would.
He lifted his bowl and continued walking, slower now, searching faces. Panic folds people inward. Somewhere in this town was a person who would not sleep tonight. Someone who would count the days like heartbeats and feel each one closing in.
Forty-five days.
Enough time to share tea.
Enough time to laugh.
Enough time to sit beside someone while the sky grew strange.
If the world must end, it would end with steady breathing. With warmth close by. With a hand that trembled less.
The rogue planet could take the oceans.
It would not take his peace.
