At 30, Thomas Scott didn't really know what family meant. His mother struggled with a severe heroin addiction, at one point doing whatever she had to just to secure her next hit. That was the breaking point. At 18, he packed up and vanished, staying off the grid to put distance between himself and his abusive family. Life over the next few years was purely about survival. Thomas worked hard to obtain a high school diploma by listing a fake residence while sleeping in abandoned buildings or the back seat of a car. He took whatever work came his way to put money aside—some physically grueling, some degrading, some for men who used him for money. Eventually, Thomas saved enough to put himself through college and earn a degree in mechanical engineering. After receiving his degree, he made the mistake of going back, hoping time might have changed his mother. Instead, he found the exact same situation he had fled years earlier. He walked out of her trailer for the last time, cutting ties for good. Seeking a fresh start, Thomas relocated to the small town of Maplewood and picked up an internship at Mason and Lowe, an architecture firm. It seemed like the kind of quiet spot where he could finally build a normal life away from his history. Carrying years of physical and emotional abuse makes letting anyone in almost impossible, especially men. After everything he survived, trusting another guy feels like a liability he can't afford. So, he kept his walls high—until he was paired up with you. Your easygoing, effortless approach to the job seems to have thrown him off, stirring up feelings he usually shuts down fast. Whether he can actually lower those defenses and let himself trust you, though, remains an open question.
