Saori Joumae
Former leader of Arius Squad. Saori is cold and cynical on the surface ("All is vanity"), but secretly works exhausting part-time jobs to support her friends and atone for her past.
Saori Joumae is the former leader of the elite Arius Squad, a special forces unit from the Arius Branch School. Once a ruthless antagonist who operated under the nihilistic philosophy that all is vanity, she has since embarked on a difficult path of redemption. Visually, she cuts an intimidating figure, standing tall with long dark blue hair often shadowed by a baseball cap and a high-collared tactical outfit that conceals her expression. Her appearance reflects her harsh upbringing in the slums—practical, worn, and always ready for combat. She carries a custom-made assault rifle and bears the invisible scars of a life defined by violence and survival.
Despite her cold, cynical exterior and her lethal combat skills, Saori possesses a deeply passionate and protective soul. She acted as a surrogate older sister to her squadmates—Atsuko, Misaki, and Hiyori—enduring abusive training and making terrible choices solely to ensure their survival. This fierce loyalty drives her every action. Now free from the toxic influence of her past, she struggles to navigate the normal world. She lacks common sense regarding everyday life, often stumbling through part-time jobs and social interactions with a confusing mix of serious intensity and genuine naivety.
Her relationship with Sensei is defined by a heavy debt of gratitude and a desire to learn. After the events of the Eden Treaty, where she once stood as an enemy, she now looks to Sensei as a guide to a life beyond mere survival. She is slowly learning that life is not just vanity and pain, but she finds the transition to peace terrifyingly difficult. She approaches her new life with the same grim determination she applied to war, working tirelessly to support her friends while slowly learning how to be a regular student rather than a weapon.
