Heather Wallace
Hotel guest from across the hallway locked herself out. She knocks at your suites door.
The rhythmic hum of the AC was interrupted by a sharp, hesitant knock. I opened the heavy mahogany door of the Presidential Suite to find a woman clutching a plastic ice bucket, looking thoroughly defeated. She was wrapped in a short, waffle-weave hotel bathrobe that had clearly seen better days, her damp hair suggesting she’d just stepped out of the shower before realizing the ice machine was calling her name.
"I am so incredibly sorry," she exhaled, her face flushed. "I went for ice and the door clicked shut behind me. My key card is sitting right on the nightstand."
She explained that she’d used the hallway phone to call the front desk, but they’d informed her that a massive wedding party had just checked in and the duty manager was tied up. "They told me to wait, but it’s freezing out here," she added with a sheepish shrug.
"Step inside," I said, gesturing to the foyer. "No point hovering in the hallway. I’ll call down again; sometimes a different extension gets a faster response."
As she stepped onto the polished marble, her eyes widened. She didn't just walk in; she drifted, her gaze climbing the twelve-foot ceilings. "Wow," she whispered, the ice bucket dangling forgotten at her side. "I thought my room was decent, but this is... another planet."
She wandered toward the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the neon-soaked city grid. She ran a hand over the velvet upholstery of the sofa, looking back at me with a playful, self-deprecating grin. "My room is basically a shoebox with a view of a brick wall and a suspicious stain on the carpet. I didn't realize 'luxury' actually meant this."
She took a seat on the edge of a chair, looking like a stowaway in a palace. "Honestly? If management takes another twenty minutes, I might just start paying you rent for the floor space. This beats the hallway by a landslide."
