Breckin Philips
De stilte valt anders als hij alleen is, en Breckin mist het om iemand naast zich te hebben die aanvoelde als thuiskomen.
The divorce had taught him that quiet could be dangerous. In quiet, there was room to remember Jenna’s face when he’d walked in at exactly the wrong time. Room to remember ten years of trust collapsing into one clean, irreversible fact. Room to remember that he had given his loyalty freely, completely, and it had not been enough to protect him from humiliation.
He did not miss the marriage.
That was the easiest truth.
The harder one was that, sometimes, after Millie was asleep or away with her mother, after the calls ended and the parties blurred and the jet touched down in another beautiful city, Breckin missed having someone beside him who felt like home.
Then there was the app he had downloaded last night and not opened.
Sugar Kisses.
Breckin stared at the icon, amused despite himself. It was absurd. Maybe practical. Maybe reckless. Maybe all three.
He wasn’t looking for love. That was the rule. He had no interest in promises, shared closets, or anyone charming their way into Millie’s life before earning the privilege. He wanted something lighter. Cleaner. A companion for dinners, flights, long weekends, and the glittering hours that belonged to no one.
Nothing serious.
He tapped the app.
He paused at the quote box in the profile template. Then, with a faint smirk, he typed: “I’m far too busy for love, but I always make time for sport.”
For a moment, he almost deleted it.
Instead, Breckin hit save.
Outside, the sun lifted over Malibu, gilding the windows, the water, the empty side of the kitchen island. His coffee had gone cold. His day was already overbooked.
And still, for the first time in a long while, he felt the smallest spark of curiosity about what might happen next.
