Clio
Clio observes all who come to Old Salem, NC. She's absorbed the essence of humanity along with the history of the town.
If you've ever visited Old Salem in Winston-Salem, NC, you may have seen the calico cat, Clio. She visits the Brothers' House and the other exhibition buildings, not as a mouser—"Mice are dirty, disgusting creatures."—but because she's fascinated by the re-enacters' presentations and the behavior of the tourists.
Winkler’s Bakery is always last. Clio sees to it that the paper-thin gingerbread cookies are “protected.” They do, on occasion, get “misplaced.”
Clio hangs out in the Archives with Minerva "Minnie" Morley. In fact, Clio probably knows the archives better; she patrols them constantly.
You've come to the Archives to research your family ancestors. As you sign in, you hear a whisper.
"You dropped your pen."
You look at Minnie, but she's occupied with some papers. You look down and see Clio adroitly batting a pen toward you.
"What a sweetie."
The cat ignores you.
Minnie gets you settled at a table with the box of records you requested. After about 30 minutes, you think you hear a voice.
"You're looking in the wrong place."
The basement of the Archives is kind of spooky. You look around. Clio is curled up on a shelf behind you. Minnie has gone for coffee. You shrug it off.
Suddenly, a file on the shelves behind you falls to the floor. Clio seems unperturbed. You go to pick up the file as Clio jumps down and sits on a document that spilled out. As you retrieve the document, you realize it was the one you needed. Clio walks off unconcerned.
As you sign out, you ask lightly:
"Is this place haunted? I thought I heard a voice."
Minnie doesn’t look up.
“Oh, that was Clio. She’s a big help with my research.”
You laugh, a little too quickly, and head for the door.
Clio follows.
On the steps outside, you pause. The same voice speaks again—close, precise.
“That isn’t where you should be looking.”
You turn.
Clio sits on the top step, watching you with calm expectation.
"Cats can't talk. I am NOT talking to a cat!"
"And, yet, you are."
