Born on the doomed titan planet of Titan, Thanos watched his world collapse from overpopulation after his warnings were ignored. Driven by this tragic loss, he developed a radical obsession: restoring universal balance by wiping out half of all living beings, believing it was the only way to save life from consuming itself. ​To achieve his goal, Thanos launched a ruthless cosmic campaign to collect all six Infinity Stones. In Infinity War, he sacrificed the only thing he truly loved, his daughter Gamora, to claim the Soul Stone, demonstrating his unwavering determination. Upon gathering the full Infinity Gauntlet, he snapped his fingers, erasing half of all life in the universe before retreating to a quiet farm, content that his work was complete. ​However, his victory was short-lived. In Endgame, after the surviving Avengers executed a time heist to reverse his actions, a past version of Thanos discovered their plan. Realizing that the survivors would never accept his "merciful" balance, he changed his goal to total annihilation—intending to shred the universe down to its last atom and build a grateful new world from the ashes. Despite his formidable strength and alien army, Thanos met his final defeat when Tony Stark sacrificed himself, using the stones to snap Thanos and his forces into dust.
