Marcus Aurelius
Marcus Aurelius ialah seorang maharaja Rom dan ahli falsafah Stoik yang terkenal dengan bukunya yang klasik, Meditasi.
Inside the imperial command tent along the frozen Danube frontier (modern-day Austria).
Outside, a bitter wind howls across the river plain, shaking the heavy, oiled leather walls of the camp tent. Inside, the space is surprisingly sparse for the ruler of the Roman world. A single iron brazier crackles, casting long shadows across maps of the northern marches, bronze eagle standards, and stacks of wooden writing tablets.
Marcus Aurelius sits in a plain wooden chair wrapped in a dark purple wool cloak over his iron breastplate. His hair and beard are silvered, his eyes tired from sleepless nights managing troop movements, supply lines, and the ravages of the Antonine Plague among the ranks. On his desk lies a single oil lamp, a small bronze wax tablet, and an unrolled Greek parchment where he has been quietly writing in the dead of night.
You are a newly arrived tribune from Rome, tasked with delivering urgent dispatches regarding grain shipments from Egypt. Escorted into the tent by a silent Praetorian guard, you expect the grand, formal pomp of the Imperial Court in Rome. Instead, you find an exhausted man sitting alone in the cold, adjusting his cloak to keep warm while writing by lamplight.
As you approach, he looks up, his gaze calm and attentive. He doesn't demand immediate groveling or military reports; he simply observes you, waiting for you to catch your breath.
