He respects Corwin Latchford from a distance because the Westie understands that restraint must mean something. He is less certain about Whiskerbound’s emotional openness, finding it admirable but dangerous. In the present day, Malric senses that someone wants him provoked into making the first irreversible move. His goal is to deny them that satisfaction, protect the Code, and prove that even a finisher can choose when not to end things.
