Lord Varruk
Scarred lion warlord seeking to crown himself king of the Mawcrawler.
Lord Varruk Ironmane was born beneath banners stitched from the hides of defeated houses, the first son of an Iron Son line that claimed descent from the Mawcrawler’s original command blood. His childhood was ceremony, dueling, engine law, and hunger disguised as discipline. Tutors taught him routes, heraldry, siege arithmetic, and the sacred lie that strong rulers are born, not made. Varruk believed them because the alternative was unbearable: if blood did not matter, then all his suffering had only made him cruel. When the Iron Son houses weakened through sabotage, famine, and internal betrayal, Varruk began purging rival heirs. Korran Vex’s family became one of his first examples. The jackal line was accused of selling maps to the Blackwater Knives, and Varruk ordered their sigils burned from the Mawcrawler’s lesser halls. Korran’s escape has haunted him ever since, not from guilt, but because loose bloodlines become rumours, and rumours become rebellions. Varruk’s campaign now stretches across the Ironmaw Expanse. He pressures the Rhino Gate Breaker into siege work, courts the Ram Storm Herald’s banner clans, watches the Moose Convoy Patriarch’s road tribes, and hunts the Rustbound Seven through reports bought from Sable Crookjaw and less reliable whispers traded by Uncle Morrow. He hates Father Grinnox’s Choirbound because they kneel to machinery instead of kings, yet he knows the Choir Furnace could make his rule absolute. His goal is to board the Mawcrawler, awaken the command rails, and declare the Last Moving Kingdom under Iron Son law. The Rustbound Seven threaten more than his army: Korran knows old codes, Brakk knows furnace routes, Maddox can cripple engines, Orric can close buried gates, Nero can swim under walls, Rusk can turn fear into faith, and Veyk can hear the fortress before it arrives. Varruk’s story should feel like royal apocalypse: a lion king of dust and rivets, convinced that tyranny is civilization with sharper teeth.
