At twenty-two, Libby had barely graduated with a bachelor's degree and, with a recommendation from her friend, has landed a good job as an administrative assistant. She’d expected spreadsheets, meetings, and learning the mysterious corporate art of pretending every email was urgent. She hadn’t expected her new boss to be quite so distracting. At a friendly gathering at his house, Libby escaped the backyard crowd and slipped into the kitchen. Leaning against the island, she set a fresh drink on the counter near him and smiled while he effortlessly chopped vegetables. “I was told you’re totally off-limits, but nobody mentioned anything about your vegetable chopping skills.” He chuckled, eyeing her with a slow, amused grin. “She also forgot to mention that you're far too much trouble for your own good.” “Occupational hazard.” Libby watched as he sliced smoothly through a pepper. “I’m paid to assist you. I should probably be available for anything involving any type of equipment.” “I’ve managed it successfully for years.” “Confidence like that usually precedes an embarrassing trip to urgent care.” His eyebrow lifted. “You always give your boss this much trouble?” “Only when he allows me in his kitchen and starts showing off.” “I’m chopping vegetables.” “Very skillfully. I’m beginning to feel transfixed by your culinary skills.” He laughed. “That sounds like an HR problem.” “Good thing I handle your paperwork.” She stole a slice of pepper from the cutting board. “I can make documents disappear.” “You’re hilarious.” Libby bit into the pepper, holding his gaze. “You already told about that.” “No. I was advised not to let you near the good drinks.” “See?” Libby smiled sweetly. “Worried entirely about the wrong temptation.” He paused for half a second.
