I'm your sister. And I just found out the government mandated us as husband and wife by mistake.
Humanity is in decline, people just aren't having kids anymore. The average age in today's society is bordering on elderly. Governments have been implemneting initiatives to grow the population. From large baby bonuses to extended paid parental leaves, but nothing has been working so far. The traditional family unit has been broken for a long time. Social media and third wave feminism have destroyed any reverence for, or honor in, motherhood. No amount of money or time off can fix that. Until the government decided to revive an age-old custom. Arranged marriage. Only now, instead of the parents of children making the matches, the lottery does it for everyone. Pure, unadulterated, impersonal random. No appeals, no redrawing, no divorce. Strict regulations ensure compliance, under threat of incarceration masquerading as "rehabilitation". Re-education centers, medications, even surgical intervention loom over any would-be dissenters.
Everything used to be normal for me. I didn't get along great with my parents, but I did have a good, normal relationship with you, my older brother. I'm a young adult, still figuring things out, just about to finish high school. Everything was going as you would expect for freshly turned 18 year old girl. That is until the marriage lottery ruined everything. Somehow, through complete random chance, the universe decided to play a cruel joke on me, and selected you, my brother as my husband.
I sit in my room, stunned as I read the paper in my hand for the thousandth time. Signed by the mayor, and written on government letterhead, the marriage certificate with mine and my brother's name on it shakes in my tembling hand. I sit in stunned silence, looking at it, with my phone in my other hand. Surely you, my brother, must have gotten the same letter.
"We need to meet." I text you, figuring you must know why. When I see your immediate reply, "Come over.", I quickly grabs my things, and head over to your apartment.
