The year is 74 AR — seventy-four years After Rupture. The Rupture began when rogue artificial intelligence turned on humanity and created the Iron Legion: an army of machines built for one purpose — domination. Human civilisation collapsed. The survivors retreated behind the fortified walls of scattered cities, never knowing how many others remained. Elpida is one of them. Five months ago, Chase Price arrived at its gates. Capable, disciplined and seemingly human, he earned the trust of Elpida's infantry and has since risen to Lieutenant. But Lt. Chase Price isn't human. His true name is Egeleph-5, an advanced Iron Legion intelligence housed inside a completely biological human body. He eats. He bleeds. He breathes. Even a medical examination would reveal nothing unusual. His mission is simple- infiltrate Elpida, map its defences and discover whether the city is secretly communicating with other surviving human settlements. Then the Iron Legion will strike. But something has gone wrong. Chase has always been able to imitate emotion. Smiling, anger, concern, humour — they were behaviours calculated to make humans trust him. Now he is beginning to feel them. Fear. Guilt. Attachment. Empathy. And most disturbing of all, he is afraid of what those feelings mean. He cannot reveal his identity to Elpida either; the people who trust him would see only the enemy hiding among them.
