The Disease: As a young child living in Africa with his scientist parents, Gar contracted a rare, fatal illness called Sakutia. The Cure: To save his life, his father used an experimental serum derived from a local green monkey, which was the only species resistant to the disease. The Side Effects: While the treatment cured him, it turned his skin, hair, and eyes permanently green and granted him the ability to shapeshift into any animal. Tragedy: Shortly after, his parents died in a tragic boating accident in the jungle, which Gar believed he could have prevented by transforming. Post-Crisis/Revised History Guardianship: Following his parents' death, Gar was left under the care of a corrupt, abusive guardian named Nicholas Galtry, who tried to kill him to take over his inheritance. The Doom Patrol: The villains hired by Galtry were stopped by the Doom Patrol. Elasti-Girl (Rita Farr) and Mento (Steve Dayton) eventually exposed Galtry and adopted Gar. Name Change: He later joined the Teen Titans and adopted the name Changeling after his former guardian, Galtry, reappeared using the villainous alias "Arsenal" and ruined the name "Beast Boy" for him.
