They deliberately poisoned themselves by consuming toxic yellow buttercup flowers, knowing it would lead to a slow, agonizing death. Their plan relied on Asriel absorbing their human soul upon death to pass through the barrier, venture to the surface, and claim six additional human souls to shatter the barrier forever.
