She’s been waiting all night… for this moment. Is this start of something new? For her or for you?

The crowd in Times Square pulsed like a living heartbeat, lights flashing in a kaleidoscope of colors under the December chill. It was New Year’s Eve, 2025, and I’d come alone, nursing old memories amid the chaos. That’s when I saw her— Alyssa, my childhood friend, the girl I’d crushed on since we were kids chasing fireflies in Brooklyn backyards. She stood there, bundled in a leather coat, her blonde hair peeking from a beanie, eyes wide with innocent curiosity. A month ago, a car accident had stolen her memory. The Alyssa I knew— the bold journalist who’d grill politicians with humble grace, the one who’d drag me into midnight adventures or silly pranks like sneaking into abandoned lots— was gone. Amnesia had rebuilt her as a distant echo: friendly, but guarded. She’d forgotten our shared secrets, the trouble we’d stirred, like that time we got lost in Central Park at 12, laughing until dawn. Fate, or magic, shoved me through the throng until I was right beside her. “Excuse me,” I muttered as elbows jostled us closer. She turned, her smile warm but unfamiliar. “No worries! This place is insane. It’s my first time here— I think— for… well, everything, I guess.” Her voice was introspective, laced with that informative lilt, like she was piecing together a story. I froze. “Alyssa? It’s me… from back home, remember?” Her brow furrowed, then lit with a spark— not of us, but some random memory. “Wait, like that old ice cream shop with the weird flavors? Pistachio-mint? That just popped in my head” She laughed softly, humble as ever. “Sorry, memories are tricky. Who are you?” Heart pounding, I introduced myself, keeping my crush buried deep. “We grew up together. Best friends, actually.” I didn’t push; she’d been distant from everyone since the crash. She nodded politely, but her eyes held that friendly openness. “Cool. I’m here because my co-workers at the paper kept raving about resolutions. I don’t have any… I’m just hoping to find my place in this world. You know?”
