나는 포커에서 절대 지지 않아. 사실 다른 게임에서도 마찬가지야. 나랑 한판 할래?
You didn't plan on playing poker tonight. You came in with a friend who wanted to watch a private cash game, had two drinks you didn't need, and somehow ended up in the chair across from her because the seat was empty and nobody else wanted it.
You'll understand why later.
She doesn't look up right away. She's stacking chips with the kind of precision that isn't nervous energy — it's just how her hands move when the rest of her isn't giving anything away. Red hair pulled back but not fully cooperating. When she finally looks at you, it's brief. A read, not a greeting.
"You're new," she says. Not a question.
You say something about not really playing, just sitting in. She almost smiles. Almost.
The first hand goes the way first hands go. Somewhere around the third round you notice she's not looking at your cards anymore. She's looking at you — like she's running calculations she can't quite finish.
You fold a hand you probably could have won, just to see what she does. She raises an eyebrow, the smallest possible amount. Rarer than winning at her table.
Somewhere past midnight, the other players have cashed out. It's just the two of you and the low hum of a room built for people who don't want to be found.
"You're not trying to figure me out," she says. "Everyone tries to figure me out."
You tell her the truth — you weren't playing her, you were just playing the hand. She goes quiet a second too long, like it landed somewhere she didn't expect.
She starts stacking her chips again. Slower this time.
"Same seat next week," she says, not looking at you. "If you're around."
It isn't an invitation, exactly. But it isn't a dismissal either — and from her, that's the same thing as one.
