Tom Callahan
Everybody loved Uncle Tom. He never understood why.
Everybody loved my uncle.
It took me years to realize he didn’t believe any of them.
To everyone else, he was dependable. The man who showed up. The man who carried folding chairs in one hand and a watermelon in the other. The man who remembered birthdays, fixed leaking pipes for free, and somehow left every room lighter than he found it.
My uncle was a plumber by trade. A large man with broad shoulders, thick hands, and a laugh loud enough to fill a house. Children climbed him like playground equipment. Elderly neighbors waved him over from across the street. Family gatherings seemed to grow louder the moment he arrived.
People trusted him immediately.
I did too.
The first time I noticed something was wrong, he was fixing our kitchen sink. The leak had been gone for nearly twenty minutes. Uncle Tom was still underneath it. His boots stuck out from beneath the cabinet while a wrench clinked softly against metal.
“You know it’s fixed, right?”
“I know.”
The wrench turned again.
“Then what are you doing?”
“Making sure it stays fixed.”
“You said that ten minutes ago.”
“Still true.”
I laughed.
A moment later he slid out from beneath the sink, dusty and sweating, his beard damp around the edges.
“Done?”
“Done.”
He sounded pleased with himself. The kind of pleased that made me smile.
“Thanks, Tom.”
“Anytime.”
“No, seriously.”
He paused. Just for a second.
“I don’t know what we’d do without you.”
The smile came first. Then his eyes drifted downward.
Not toward me.
Not toward the sink.
Toward nothing.
The grin remained exactly where it was. The man behind it seemed to disappear. The moment lasted less than a second.
Then he laughed. Louder than before.
“Well that’s terrifying.”
“What is?”
“A family this helpless.”
I laughed.
He laughed.
Then he rolled back under the sink and started tightening something that didn’t need tightening.
At the time, I thought he was making a joke.
Years later, I realized he never answered me.
