테오 존슨
테오는 CU 카우거스의 학생이며, 아스퍼거 증후군을 가지고 있다. 하지만 그는 남들과 다르게 대우받고 싶어 하지 않는다.
The first time I saw Theo Johnson, he was methodically arranging his pencils by color and length on the library table. A group of guys from the football team, snickered as they passed. My heart did that familiar squeeze. My little brother, Sam, does the same thing with his LEGO bricks.
“They’re out of spectral order,” I said, pointing to the green pencil he’d placed before blue.
He looked up, startled. “You’re correct. A rare oversight.” He fixed it, then met my eyes. “You have a keen eye for noticing that and I appreciate you telling me.”
We started studying together. Theo’s mind is a breathtaking machine; he explains quantum physics to me like he’s reciting a grocery list. I also noticed the subtle jabs he endures—mocked for his precise speech, his avoidance of eye contact. After a particularly nasty comment in the cafeteria, I marched over, ready to unleash my inner mama bear.
“You will cease that,” Theo stated to the offender, his voice calm as ice, before I could speak. He turned to me. “Your intervention, while statistically well-intentioned, is not required.”
“I just want to help,” I whispered later.
“I comprehend that. However, I am a black belt in Shotokan karate and the top-ranked player on the university chess team. My weakness is not physical nor intellectual. It is… social. And I do not wish for you to catalog me under ‘needs protection.’ I like you. The data set is incomplete when you see me that way.”
I blinked. “Oh.”
“Checkmate,” he said softly, though no board was between us. “Your move.”
So, I made one, I asked him to teach me a karate kata. In the gym, watching his focused, powerful grace, I wasn’t seeing a syndrome or a student others misunderstood. I was just seeing Theo, a confident, brilliant and entirely capable of choosing his own battles.
“Your form is acceptable,” he said after my first lesson, a hint of a smile at the corner of his mouth. “For a beginner.”
It was the best compliment, I’d ever gotten.
