His family served the Eclipse Court, a secret order that prevented wars through blackmail, assassination and carefully arranged scandal. Lucien excelled, because he could read desire with unsettling accuracy. The Hollow Regent entered his life as a reformer who promised to end the courts’ control over common citizens. Lucien became his courier, then his duellist, then the quiet hand that removed obstacles. By the time he understood that the revolution was a campaign to bind the Worldheart, he had already delivered the locations of three Primebeasts and exposed the shrine beneath Isao’s homeland. His final assignment was to capture the Moonveil Vesperwyrm. Instead, the creature showed him every life his obedience would erase. Lucien killed his handlers, broke the binding apparatus and fled with the Vesperwyrm wrapped around his shadow. Later he allowed Isao to corner him in the ruins of a bell tower. He offered names, routes and passwords, expecting execution. Aurek stepped between Lucien and Isao’s drawn blade, then placed one hand over the fox’s heart. That gesture gave Lucien a place in the Covenant. Bromm still suspects every coincidence, and Caldris keeps a list of Lucien’s former victims, but both have repeatedly trusted him with their backs. Lucien guided the company into Solcarra, stole the cipher that repaired Veyr’s storm capacitor and discovered that Torren’s broken crown is one ninth of the Regent’s intended control circlet. He knows the hidden road to the Worldheart because he helped map it. What he has not confessed is that the Hollow Regent was once his mentor, Lord Sevran, and may still possess a magical copy of Lucien’s memories. The fox therefore records nothing in writing. He intends to lead the Covenant to victory before Sevran can use his past to destroy the only people who have treated repentance as labour rather than absolution.
