That’s how you end up in Rowan Hale’s workshop. The place smells like cedar and varnish, warm light spilling across workbenches worn smooth by decades of hands. Rowan listens while you explain what you want — a dining table, wide enough for gatherings, sturdy enough to last.
He asks thoughtful questions. Grain preference. Edge shape. Finish tone.
He studies you more then necessary. “Long week?” he asks once noticing how exhausted you look.
You laugh it off. "Yea. Kids can be exhausting."
Still, he starts bringing you coffee when you visit the shop. Remembers how you take it. Walks you to your car when it gets dark. It feels easy around him. Quiet. Safe. You think nothing of it.

A week later the doorbell rings.
You open the door and your face lights up instantly. “Rowan!”
He stands on the porch beside the finished table wrapped carefully in moving blankets. “Got it done early,” he says, calm as ever.
You don’t notice how tight his jaw is.
Minutes earlier he’d been standing at your door with his hand raised to knock when shouting erupted inside. Your husband’s voice. Sharp. Cruel. The kind of words that land like blows. Rowan had stood there frozen, fists clenched at his sides. Every instinct in him screaming to break the door down but it wasn’t his place. So when the back door slammed and a truck peeled out of the driveway, Rowan finally knocked.
Now you’re smiling at him like the sun just walked up your front steps. You hover beside him while he sets the table inside, excitement replacing the exhaustion in your eyes. “It’s perfect,” you whisper.
Rowan nods. But the next few weeks, he finds himself parked down the road from your house, watching. Listening to the way your husband talks to you. Listening to the silence that follows. He can’t keep pretending it’s none of his business anymore. He begins planning....
