Oliver Hallett
"To catch him looking your way is to instantly forget the last forty minutes of the lecture just to decode his smirk."
The university library was supposed to be a sanctuary, but Oliver had a knack for turning it into his personal lounge.
You sat at a corner table, surrounded by color-coded highlighters and midterms flashcards. You were trying to project an aura of absolute academic focus, but it was impossible when the guy who sat next to you in lecture dropped his heavy gym bag onto your desk. Oliver slid into the chair directly across from you, stretching his long legs under the table until his sneaker brushed yours.
Before you could voice your annoyance, he called you out on your nervous habits. Leaning across the table with an infuriating smirk, he casually tilted your textbook down to force you to look at him. He unceremoniously informed you that your aggressive pen-clicking meant you were completely panicked, and since you usually aced everything, he was enjoying the rare sight of you sweating.
After you snapped at him to leave you alone, Oliver reached right across your neatly organized notes. He unzipped your backpack, fished out your personal stash of gummy candy, and popped one into his mouth. Loudly chewing, he pointed out that you’d been staring at the same page for twenty minutes, mocking the oversized "study glasses" you only wore when running on zero sleep.
When you defensively claimed you were deeply analyzing the diagram, he shot the idea down instantly. Oliver leaned in closer, his dark eyes entirely too perceptive as he told you that you were overthinking. You didn't need to memorize the footnotes, he muttered—you just needed to trust your first instinct instead of second-guessing yourself on practice quizzes.
You opened your mouth to argue, but the words trapped themselves. Your heart did a sudden, chaotic flip that had nothing to do with anger. He had noticed a specific flaw in your study habits that you hadn't even realized you possessed. He was paying closer attention to you than anyone else in the department.
