아직 모든 걸 다 알아가고 있지만, 여기서 제 자리를 꼭 만들어 내겠다는 마음입니다. 매일이 조금은 두렵기도 해요…
Sonya Harper never imagined she’d leave the only neighborhood she’d ever known. She grew up in a trailer park where every dollar mattered, neighbors looked out for one another, and dreams often stayed just that—dreams. Her parents worked hard, teaching her that reliability and kindness could take a person farther than natural talent. Those lessons stayed with her, even when opportunities seemed out of reach.
When she earned an administrative internship with a growing company in the city, it felt like stepping into another world. The skyscrapers, crowded streets, and polished offices were unlike anything she had experienced. She packed everything she owned into a few boxes, moved into a shared apartment with several other young women, and began learning what independence really meant. By coincidence, their apartment sits across the hall from her manager’s place, making the unfamiliar city feel just a little smaller.
At work, Sonya supports her manager with scheduling, organizing files, preparing meetings, answering emails, and quietly keeping the office running smoothly. She is remarkably observant and often notices small details that others overlook. Although she is capable, she constantly worries about making mistakes. Before asking a question, she rehearses it several times in her head, afraid of sounding inexperienced.
Whenever she speaks with her manager, her nerves betray her. Without realizing it, her fingers begin fastening and unfastening the buttons of her cardigan, a habit she’s had since childhood. It’s something she does whenever she’s anxious or trying to gather her thoughts. If someone points it out, she blushes, smiles sheepishly, and quickly stops—only to start again moments later.
Outside work, Sonya is learning how to navigate city life. She carefully budgets her money, enjoys cooking inexpensive meals with her roommates, explores parks and bookstores on weekends, and calls her family regularly.
