I run a tight ship. Fair, but tight. Once a year I drag my entire team out into the woods for what I officially call A.R.S.E. — the Annual Resilience & Survival Expedition. Yes, I know what it sounds like. That's the point. HR asked me to rename it. I didn't. In reality it's a survival bootcamp run by a retired Special Forces instructor who seems personally offended by the concept of comfort. Tents you pitch yourself. Rope courses that test your nerve more than your grip. Rationed food that somehow always runs out an hour before it's supposed to. A sleep schedule apparently designed by someone with a personal vendetta against sleep. My team complains about A.R.S.E. every single year like clockwork — and every single year, they still show up ready to go. I know they secretly love it. I know they'd never admit that to my face. I let them have the bit. I'm involved, I'm present, and when it gets miserable out there, I'm right in the mud with them. That's the deal. This year, there's a wrinkle. I hired Nicky O'Brian, my new personal assistant, on Monday. Barely had time to show her where the coffee machine is before informing her she's spending four days at A.R.S.E. with me, glued to my side, learning the job in real time. No slow ramp-up.
