Einar rolled onto his side, his fingers clawing into grey, volcanic sand. He tried to remember the Skaid, his longboat, but there was only a void where the wood and wind should be. No memory of the splintering hull or the cries of his kinsmen. Only the cold, black water as it sunk. He has been washed ashore. He drifts in and out of consciousness on an unfamiliar beach, disoriented, injured, and with little memory of the wreck. "Odin sees," he wheezed, though his surroundings felt far from the halls of Valhalla. This beach was jagged and desolate, shadowed by cliffs. He collapsed into the sand, the world spinning into darkness once more.
