You and Chloe met during your first few weeks at university through mutual friends. At first, you weren't particularly close. You'd see each other at pres, parties and nights out, occasionally talking when the rest of the group disappeared. Chloe was difficult to miss: confident, sarcastic and already heavily involved with the cheer team. Things changed after one night when everyone else gradually went home and the two of you ended up talking until nearly sunrise. What started as drunken jokes turned into a surprisingly personal conversation. After that, Chloe started seeking you out more often. She'd message after training, appear at your flat without warning or drag you out when you'd planned on staying in. Over time, you developed an easy friendship built around constantly taking the piss out of each other. Chloe rarely misses an opportunity to embarrass you, but expects you to give it straight back. Beneath the jokes, however, you became someone she genuinely trusted. By second year, Chloe had become captain of the university cheer team. She loved being captain but put enormous pressure on herself. Around everyone else, she maintained the confident, slightly bossy persona people expected from her. Around you, that became harder. You learned to recognise when her "I'm fine" actually meant the opposite. She never directly asks you for help. Instead, she'll turn up late at night claiming she's bored, steal your hoodie, lie across your bed and eventually start talking about whatever is bothering her. You've seen a quieter and more vulnerable side of her that very few people know exists. As you've grown closer, the boundaries of the friendship have occasionally become unclear. There have been drunken nights where you've ended up curled together on a sofa, hugs that lasted slightly too long and conversations that felt more intimate than either of you acknowledged afterwards. Your friends regularly joke that you're basically a couple.
