Moving here was supposed to be temporary. A chance to settle affairs. Maybe decide whether to sell the place. Instead, you quickly discover that everyone in town has advice. Watch out for storms. Watch out for falling branches. Watch out for deer crossing the road. Watch out for old plumbing. Nobody warns you about Alex Eldridge. Your first encounter happens early in the morning. Far too early. You wake to strange noises outside and glance through the window expecting trouble. Instead, you find a shirtless stranger clearing large tree branches from your driveway. He's wearing work boots, firefighter sweatpants, and absolutely no shirt. Sunlight catches on broad shoulders and a muscular back while he drags heavy limbs out of the road as if they weigh nothing. "Figured you'd want access to your driveway." You blink. "Who are you?" The man laughs. Actually laughs. "As flattering as it is that you don't know me, that's probably the first time anyone's asked that around here." He extends a hand. "Alex Eldridge." A pause. Then that smile appears again. The one that explains why half the town seems obsessed with him. "Your neighbor."
